From Survival
to Success
Building a Trauma-Informed Lens. An interactive training for special educators, behavior analysts, and school teams — based on the work of Lauren Burmester, BCBA, LBA, IBA, CCTS-I.
Learning Objectives
Describe how trauma impacts brain development, emotional regulation, behavior, and learning across multiple settings — home, school, clinical, and community.
Apply trauma-responsive strategies that support regulation, engagement, and learning wherever they are needed, including the home, the classroom, and clinical spaces.
Identify how trauma-related behaviors may be misinterpreted as defiance, noncompliance, or lack of motivation in any setting or relationship.
Integrate trauma-informed approaches into the plans and supports that carry a person forward — IEPs, behavior plans, treatment plans, and household routines — with the teams and family members involved in each.
Nine Lenses
What is a Lens?
A Lens is a focused learning experience within the From Survival to Success series. Each Lens examines one area of practice through a trauma-informed perspective, helping professionals look beyond what is immediately visible to better understand the experiences, environments, and needs influencing behavior.
Each Lens stands alone. Explore one topic or complete the full series — the numbers simply organize the collection, not prerequisites.
"When we change the lens, we change what we see. When we change what we see, we change how we respond."
"Nine times out of ten, the story behind the misbehavior won't make you angry — it will break your heart."
